Pepper’s role was to guide customers to the right service point. The decoration and moving work have been completed, and the building will reopen as the renewed Culture House Laikku on Saturday, 28 April with a large opening ceremony carnival. In the event, Laikku will demonstrate its versatility and take charge of the cultural centre, the surrounding park and the recently renovated Laikunlava from 10 am to 6 pm with its colourful programme.

The removal has started a couple of weeks behind schedule this spring. Night frost and dry weather continue to slow down the removal. Due to sunny and dry weather, the main streets have been treated with salt brine to reduce airborne dust.

The centre houses city services from a library to a health centre, all under one roof. <![CDATA[Tramlines for the streets of Tampere – the busiest phase of the tramway project is starting ]]> https://www.tampere.fi/en/city-of-tampere/info/current-issues/2018/03/23032018_1.html The construction of part 1 of the Tampere tramway (city centre–Hervanta–Tampere University Hospital) is progressing according to plan and the current year will be the busiest in the project when it comes to construction work. This year’s target for building new two-track line is five kilometres, i.e. a total of 20 kilometres of new track, for the streets of Tampere. Most of the tramline stops as well as the largest tramway bridges near Hervannan valtaväylä will also be constructed this year. Work continues at both ends of Hämeenkatu. The construction of the buildings for the depot area in Hervanta will start in the autumn.

The city is acquiring four robots: three little maths robots resembling owls and a small human-like humanoid robot for practising languages. The maths robots will be located in the Sorila school building, Vehmainen preschool and Pohjois-Hervanta School. Elias the robot teaching languages will be located in Tammela School.

The main theme of the event was violence against women and girls. Chancellor Merkel, who was named the recipient of the award in December, will grant the EUR 150,000 prize to a Niger civil society organisation advocating the rights of women and girls. The organisation is planning to use the money to establish a residential shelter.

<![CDATA[Tampere will continue to be a city of equality]]> https://www.tampere.fi/en/city-of-tampere/info/current-issues/2018/03/06032018_1.html Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany is the first-ever recipient of the International Gender Equality Prize introduced by the Finnish Government and will be honoured in an award ceremony in Tampere Hall in Tampere on 6 March 2018. The cause, which was chosen by Federal Chancellor Merkel to receive a prize of EUR 150,000, will be announced during the event. It is a privilege for Finland and Tampere to present the very first International Gender Equality Prize. Finland has a significant special characteristic that makes it a world leader in gender equality: It was the first country to grant women full political rights in 1906. Tampere played a significant role in the realisation of women’s suffrage. As early as in 1905, a total of 40,000 people gathered in the central square of the City of Tampere to demand general suffrage and it was granted the following year.
