The Tampere Jazz Happening begins on Thursday, 31st October. The opening concert of the festival is free of charge for the audiences and includes performances by three exquisite French ensembles: Melusine, Three Days of Forest, and House of Echo.
Vaccinations against influenza will start at health centres in Tampere and Orivesi on Monday 4 November 2019. Vaccinations will also start at child welfare clinics in November as soon as the vaccines have arrived.
It marks 20 years since the European Council held a special meeting on 15 and 16 October 1999 in Tampere. In retrospect, the view of the experts has been that the summit of Tampere was one of the most important ones in European history. Under the leadership of Paavo Lipponen, who served as Prime Minister during Finland’s Presidency in 1999, the summit of Tampere aimed for the construction of a common space of freedom, security and justice for the European Union.
Tampere Festival of Light illuminates the streets of the Tampere city centre once again during the darkest season. This year, the Festival of Light was opened earlier than usual, on 5 October, to celebrate the City of Tampere’s 240th anniversary. The Festival of Light continues until 8 March 2020. Tampere Festival of Light is celebrated for the 54th time this year.
A total of 57 proposals were submitted by the set time limit to the Viinikanlahti international urban ideas competition in Tampere, launched in May 2019. The jury will select a maximum of six competition entries to the next phase. All designs equipped with a pseudonym can be viewed on the competition website. The winner of the entire competition will be announced in April 2020.
Finland’s first international walk of fame for music has been inaugurated in Tampere. In the first phase, eleven star plates were embedded in the walk of fame street route, located on Åkerlundinkatu in the Tulli region of Tampere. Seven of the star plates honour Finland’s biggest national and international artists and professionals in the music industry. The public’s suggestions for the names to be immortalised on Finland’s Walk of Fame were collected last spring.
The freedom of choice pilot in health centre services in Tampere has ended on 30th September. The customers have been transferred back to a city health centre or an outsourced health centre starting from 1 October 2019.
