The new building replaces the old Olkahinen school building. The building is located at the address Jenseninkatu 3, on the same plot where the old school was dismantled. During the construction, the students attended school in the relocatable building on the neighbouring field.

The new Olkahinen school building has been designed for a total of 300 students. The school is for preschool education and grades 1–6 of basic education.

- The completion of the new school building is a wonderful thing; both the students and personnel have waited excitedly for the move to the new premises. We now have a building that can be adjusted for many kinds of activities and into different kinds of learning environments, says Simo Turtiainen, principal of Olkahinen Comprehensive School.

A pleasant, child-friendly desingn

The first floor houses the educational spaces for preschool and grades 1–2, rooms for practical subjects, and facilities for school health care. Other educational spaces are on the second floor.

The school yard has been reformed so that it forms a uniform space that can be used for preschool and basic education activities. The yard is on two different levels. Between the levels, there will be new stairs that can be used in teaching that takes place outside. The yard also has a fenced miniature arena, equipped with artificial grass, which can be used for activities such as football and basketball. Additionally, the yard has climbing equipment, swings and a rain shelter.

The operations of the Sorila school building, which is part of Olkahinen Comprehensive School, will continue in Sorila as before.

In the students’ opinion, the best things in the new school building are the library and gym.

Day-care centre renovation to be completed in the spring

The new school building is located on the same plot as the Olkahinen day-care centre which is currently under refurbishment. The premises of the day-care centre will be opened in February 2022.

The renovation will connect the day-care centre to the new school building through a heated corridor. The school gym will also be available for the day-care centre. Additionally, the children at the day-care centre go to the school building to eat in a space reserved for them.
