Application period for early childhood education places available in the autumn begins

Published 8.3.2021 9.27

The application period for early childhood education and open early education clubs available in August 2021 in Tampere will start on 8 March 2021. The application period ends on 28 March 2021.

Small children are playing outside in winter

If the family already knows they will need a day care place for the child this autumn, it is recommended to participate in this application period. In August, when the current age group moves from day care to preschool education, a lot of day care places will become available around the city.

Applications for a place in early childhood education for your child can also be sent all year round outside the application period. A place must be applied for at least four months before the need for day care begins.

The primary means for applying for a place is the electronic application form on the City of Tampere’s website. If necessary, the application form can also be filled in at the Tampere Service Point (located at Frenckellinaukio 2 B) from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Early childhood education services in day care centres will start on 9 August 2021, after the summertime activities have ended.

Find out more about the services and ask for further information

More information on early childhood education, different day care alternatives and the application procedure can be found on the City of Tampere’s website. The website also provides information on day care centres that provide child care services in the evenings and for shift workers as well as on language groups and open early education clubs intended for children under school age and their families.

The customer service of the Education and Learning Services answers questions related to applying and other services, tel. 040 800 7260 (Mon–Fri at 9:00–12:00) or by email to varhaiskasvatus.asiakaspalvelu(at)

Families living in the Tampere Central Region can also apply for a place in municipal early childhood education for their children in other municipalities in the nearby region (Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Orivesi, Pirkkala, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi). The application is made for both the applicant’s own municipality of residence and the applicant’s region. The residents of the municipality have priority for early childhood education in their municipality of residence so a place can only be granted to other children in the region if there are open places left.

Private early childhood education options increasing

The offering of private early childhood education services has increased in recent years. Private services are an important part of a functional service network in Tampere and the municipalities of the region.

The private service offering includes, among other things, day care centres for which the city grants a service voucher to the family (service voucher day care centres). The family may also get a place in a private day care centre with the private day care allowance (granted by Kela). In this case, the family applies for a place by first contacting the chosen day care provider directly.

Private day care centres that operate as purchased services are applied for using the city’s application.

A family living in Tampere can also apply for a day care place in private day care centres operating in neighbouring municipalities by contacting the day care centre in question.
