Renovation and expansion of Finnish International School of Tampere ready
The three-year renovation and expansion of Finnish International School of Tampere (FISTA) is ready. The renovated facilities of the school, located on Satakunnankatu in Amuri, will be in use when the school year starts on 10 August 2017.
The school houses grades from 1 to 9. The school will house a total of 750 pupils after the expansion and renovation. This amount will be fulfilled in autumn 2018, when the last English-speaking classes from Tammela are moved to FISTA.
‘The renovation has transformed the school into a comprehensive school that utilises electric learning environments according to the new Finnish curriculum, where learning is based on the English language. The operative idea of the school “Future Learning in a Multicultural Environment" can be realised in these new and modern facilities really well’ says Vice Principal Kaisa Kokkonen.
Co-operation and strong sense of community are the cornerstones of the school’s operational culture, and the new facilities provide an opportunity to implement them. The facilities also support the pupils’ self-guidance and investigative learning, as well as adapting a sustainable way of life. The pupils have been included in the design process of the school’s interior and yard.
The three-year construction project began in June 2014 by demolishing the previous section and excavating the rock. The new section on Satakunnankatu was finished just in time for the school year in August 2015.
For the duration of the renovation of the section on Sotkankatu, upper secondary school pupils were transferred to Frenckell’s bureau on Puutarhakatu, from where they went to classes between the city centre and Amuri. Unlike it was initially thought, the daily walk proved to be a good way to have study breaks, in the opinion of both pupils and teachers.
The use of Frenckell’s facilities ended in October 2016. In the school year 2016–2017, the renovation proceeded to the section on Suokatu, where the gym class, lunch room and home economics classes are located. These facilities were taken into use in July 2017. The school’s yard and its play and exercise equipment were also finished in July.
The renovation and expansion of the school was designed by architectural office Aarne von Boehm. The main contractor was SRV.
