The world’s only Moomin Museum will open on 17 June 2017

The Tampere Art Museum Moominvalley is moving to new premises in Tampere Hall, and it will re-open as the world’s first Moomin Museum in 2017. The new Moomin Museum will open right before the holiday season, on 17 June 2017, welcoming visitors to the fascinating world of the Moomins created by Tove Jansson.

– We decided to postpone the opening in order to allow enough time for the construction of the new exhibition and the experiences it will offer. We want to finish the construction properly and offer a museum that meets the high expectations of Moomin fans from day one, says Anna-Kaisa Heinämäki, Deputy Mayor of Tampere.

The Moomin Museum will offer new ways of experiencing the world of Moomins, although the exhibition will still be based on the original books and illustrations by Tove Jansson and the three-dimensional tableaux by Tuulikki Pietilä, which belong to the Moominvalley collection of Tampere Art Museum. The first exhibition will present about 300 drawings and paintings and 30 tableaux.

The move is part of the extensive renovation at Tampere Hall, which includes renewing the event and meeting facilities of the culture and congress centre and opening the new Tampere Hall Shop. The new restaurant and cafeteria services will be ready by the opening of the museum.

The Making of Moomin Museum exhibition opened in the Winter Garden of Tampere Hall in early November, and the Moomin Museum Reading Room and shop are housed in the lobby. The Moomin Museum Reading Room collection has Moomin books in over 20 languages and non-fiction works about Tove Jansson. The collection includes treasures spanning many years, and new editions will continually be added to it. The exhibition and library are open during the opening hours of Tampere Hall. The Tampere Hall Shop features Moomin products and books and Tampere souvenirs. Postcards sent from Tampere Hall will be equipped with Moomin stamps and a special Moomin Museum postmark. The shop is open weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during other events at Tampere Hall.
