Tampere celebrates its birthday with more than 100 events on Tampere Day
Tampere will celebrate its 237th birthday with various events on Friday 30 September, Saturday 1 October and Sunday 2 October. During the Tampere Day ("Tampereen päivä") weekend, the City of Tampere and various communities, associations and clubs will exhibit their activities all around the city.
Keeping with tradition, on Tampere Day you can visit many of the city’s museums either free of charge or at a discounted price. The Sunday 2 October is Rantaväylä Tunnel Day: the new Rantaväylä Tunnel that will be opened to traffic in 2017 will be on Sunday at 9 a.m. − 5 p.m. transformed into the funniest gym.
During the weekend you can attend concerts and children’s events, get to know new and renovated public buildings, try archery, air gun shooting and cliff descending and much more.
Tampere was established on 1 October 1779 by Gustav III, the King of Sweden. To honour this occasion, Tampere celebrates every year on the first of October and the closest weekend to that date. The first Tampere Day celebrations took place in 1955.
