Schools 

Basic education

Basic education in Tampere is provided mainly in city-maintained comprehensive schools. The City of Tampere also provides foreign-language basic education and instruction for pupils of immigrant origin.

Educational institutions

General upper secondary education provides extensive all-round education
and language skills. Additionally, it develops skills for
self-development and further study.

Adult education centre (Tampereen seudun työväenopisto) arranges courses, lectures and study circles in many fields. Human and social science subjects include philosophy, culture and nature; personal development and healthy living consists of subjects such as psychology, healthcare, physical exercise and dance; practical skills are taught in information technology, video techniques, handicrafts, woodwork; teaching in arts is offered in drama, creative writing, music and visual arts. Languages are also well represented: courses in 20 languages are offered at different levels.

Morning and afternoon activities

Morning and afternoon activities (before and after school activities) are designed for pupils in grades 1-2. All pupils in special education from pre-primary to grade 9 are offered afternoon club activities that are specially designed for them.

Preschool education

Legal preschool education organized by the municipal authority is intended for all children under school age one year before compulsory school education commences.

School health care

School nurses meet the pupils, as a rule, every year and carry out an individual health check-up and a health care plan.

Vocational education

The Tampere Vocational College Tredu provides vocational training in the Pirkanmaa region. The Tampere Adult Education Centre (TAKK) provides education for young people and adults.

Screenings 

Screenings

Mammography screening is provided for women 50 - 68 years of age living in Tampere. Also all women aged 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 years are selected for screening for detecting cases of cervical cancer.

Services for the elderly aim at ensuring a safe living environment in his/her own home for as many residents of Tampere as possible. By means of providing care at home and a parent care subsidy, aged people are given assistance which, as a result, enables them to live at home.

Parents are eligible for a variety of benefits from Kela as their children are born and grow up.

Child protection

Every person who notices that a child or adolescent needs help can contact a social welfare worker. Just as well, the child or adolescent herself/himself, parents, relatives or neighbours can also ask for help. Information can also be given anonymously.

Children's day care

Children’s day care supports child’s growth, development and learning.

Maternity and child welfare clinics

The maternity clinics serve families during pregnancy, birth and the time shortly after the birth. The mother remains registered with the maternity clinic for three months after childbirth. Usually after the age of two weeks, the follow-up of the health of the newborn baby moves to the child welfare clinic.

Different kinds of services are available for families with children. The objective is for the families to cope by their own means in various situations of life. Services are to detect potential problems at an early stage and provide treatment as soon as possible.

The Social Welfare Office for the Disabled of Tampere City carries out a guiding programme that facilitates finding a suitable service package for a mentally handicapped person and his/her family.

Sights

Visit Tampere tourist information offers information, brochures, tips, maps and much more. You can book a guided tour through us, and during the summer season we also organise sightseeing tours by bus or by foot to the public. For both summer and winter season, we gather together a weekly acitivity programme with suggestions for every weekday. The tourist information is open all year round and now from the same place, you can also get your tickets to go to almost any cultural event in Tampere!

The City of Tampere offers diverse opportunities for active outdoor exercise in jogging and cross-country skiing. There is a wide network of skiing tracks and activity paths that are maintained by modern equipment and skilled craftsmanship.

Counselling Point of social services

The Counselling Point of social services provides advice both on phone
and at the Counseling Point when you need information about services and
benefits provided by the city or if you need guidance in various
services and handling of your issues with authorities.

Social work

Adult Social Work Services help when you need support, guidance and advice in various complicated situations of life.

You get guidance and advice in the Services of the Beginning Stage and Slight Support Services. An assessment of the need for services is made if you are a new client who needs social services.

The Social welfare office for families with children can counsell you if you need help in coping with everyday life, in issues of housing and finances, in situations of violence in close and family relations or in supporting child’s development and wellbeing.
