19. XII PARIS BIENNIAL EXHIBITION OF YOUNG ARTISTS,
16 January - 27 February 1983

The first exhibition in the Sara Hildén Art Museum in 1983 was the XII Paris Biennial Exhibition of Young Artists, which filled all the exhibition space in the museum. The 1982 Biennial was open in Paris from 2 October - 14 November 1982.

An international committee with a representative from each of the invited countries is responsible for selecting the participating artists, all of whom must be under 35 years of age. Artists from 40 countries took part in the XII Biennial when it was shown in Paris. The exhibition in Finland will include artists from the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, France, the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

All the Finnish participants in the XII Paris Biennial have helped in organizing the exhibition in Finland. The artists are Martti Aiha, Marika Mäkelä, Marja Kanervo, Leena Luostarinen and Olli Lyytikäinen.

The Finnish Artists' Association of Finland and the Sara Hildén Art Museum organized the exhibition in the Sara Hildén Art Museum in cooperation with the secretariat of the Paris Biennial.

When the works were being chosen for the exhibition in Finland the main aim was to have a varied cross-section of the exhibition in Paris. The main focus in the exhibition as a whole was on new figurative painting and on the increasing significance of Expressionism in contemporary international art.

After closing in Finland, a smaller version of the same exhibition was on display in the Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo and at the Charlottenborg in Copenhagen.
