The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum is in charge of most of the regional functions of Museum Centre Vapriikki. Specialising particularly in the maintenance of cultural environments, it provides expert assistance in archaeology, architecture, building repairs, local cultural work, civic activities and protection issues.
The Museum has a cooperation agreement and a regional works agreement with the National Board of Antiquities. The agreements cover the Museum’s administrative functions, official inspections, the management of land use processes, restoration consulting services, investigations and advisory and information services in the field of the cultural environment. The latter include consulting on the repair of old buildings, maintenance of archaeological monuments (under the Adopt a Monument programme), information and education, empowerment and participation, as well as cultural environment information services. Most of the work takes place in the Cultural Environment Unit of the Provincial Museum, which maintains the Siiri information system covering conservation sites and areas, sites on which advice has been given, and research and documentation materials. The Museum also serves as the physical repository of archived materials and lends out materials and documents for research purposes.
The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum produces and updates online materials concerning the cultural environment and culture of the region. These include the Tammerkoski Heritage website; Museokompassi.fi, the portal of museums in the Tampere Region; and the Adopt a Monument website. The Museum also publishes Museokello magazine, which reports on local culture and the cultural environment, as well as the archaeological publication Pirkan maan alta and topical thematic publications.
The Cultural Environment Unit is also in charge of the administration of local museums, which is considered a part of the Provincial Museum’s local cultural work. The Ministry of Education awards a special regional supplement for these tasks within the Museum’s statutory government grant.
The premises of the unit are located within Museum Centre Vapriikki in Tampere, on the site of the former Tampella engineering works in the unique industrial setting of Tammerkoski.
