Celebrating Independence Day in Tampere

Finland celebrates its 94th Independence Day on 6 December. The Independence Day celebration of the City of Tampere will be held on 6 December 2011 beginning at 6 PM at the Keskustori square. The celebrations will culminate in fireworks fired from the park by the Old Library House (Vanha kirjastotalo). Earlier in the day you can enjoy in the city centre the national Independence Day parade, which will be arranged this year in Tampere

The national parade and the Independence Day celebrations will cause diversions in bus and car traffic. Buses will run on Independence Day according to Sunday schedules.

National Independence Day Parade in Tampere on 6 December 2011

This year, the traditional national Independence Day Parade will be arranged on 6 December 2011 in Tampere. The review of troops will be held at the
Keskustori square and the pass in review will take place on Hämeenkatu. The parade will be received by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General
Raimo Jyväsjärvi together with the Mayor of the City of Tampere Timo P. Nieminen and representatives of the War Veterans District and the Disabled War Veterans Association of Finland. The parade will be commanded by Major General Juhani Kääriäinen, Commander of the Western Command.

Troops from all of the Services will take part in the parade. The frame of the participating troops will be formed by brigade-level units of the Western Command. The Pirkanmaa Provincial Company consisting of reservists will also take part in the parade. The mass standards of the veterans and national defence organisations will assemble during both the review of troops and pass in review. The strength of the parade will be approximately 1,100 persons and 60 vehicles. Weather permitting, the Air Force will stage a flypast during the pass in review.

On 6 December, the day of the parade, those interested will have the possibility to get acquainted with some of the equipment of the Defence Forces in the Frenckell parking lot. In connection with the equipment exhibition, a van of the Soldiers Home Association will sell refreshments such as coffee, soft drinks and doughnuts. The equipment exhibition will be open to the public from 10 am to 14 pm.
