The Night of the Museums in Tampere on 25 May at 6pm–midnight
The Night of the Museums takes place in Tampere on
Saturday, 25th May 2013. The museums and other cultural institutions taking
part in this nocturnal event offer a wide range of exhibitions, guided tours
and other programme events until midnight. You can enjoy theatre, have your
photo taken for a postcard, test your knowledge in quizzes and meet police
officers. If you like music, you can attend the concert to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of Werstas, on Väinö Linnan aukio.

Immigrant Advice Centre, located on Tuomiokirkonkatu, will close its doors on 6
May for two months due to plumbing renovation work. Unfortunately, while the

early May. New allotmenteers can rent an allotment in the allotment area of

The Youth Guarantee facilitates the future of young people
The Youth
Guarantee came into force at the beginning of this year. The City of Tampere
started to fulfil the objectives of the Guarantee, defined by the Finnish
Government, by establishing a working group tasked with improving services
directed at unemployed young people. However, the weak economic situation
complicates this work. According to the chairman of the working group, Deputy
Mayor Olli-Poika Parviainen, the City should only make cost reductions that
would not impair the fulfilment of the Youth Guarantee.

City to commence grit removal
The City of Tampere is due begin the process of removing
grit from the city's streets in the week commencing 8 April 2013, weather
permitting. The
unusually cold weather and sub-zero night time temperatures in March have led
to delays with the removal process. At present, the process has been delayed by
approximately two weeks. City centre
thoroughfares will be the first stretches of road to undergo the process. This week, a calcium solution has been
applied to road surfaces, particularly along major thoroughfares and bus routes
as well as at bus stops, to bind dust particles.

Tampere wins cycling award
The Finnish Suomi Pyöräilee (Finland Cycles) Executive Committee has
granted the annual Best Local Authority for Cycling Award to Tampere.
This was due to Tampere’s commitment to promoting access to cycling and
improving cycling infrastructure over the past two years. The award was
presented to City representatives at the Suomi Pyöräilee (Finland
Cycles) event in Helsinki on 8 March 2013. At the event, Tampere was
represented by Deputy Mayor Pekka Salmi and Transport Engineer Timo
Seimelä.

City of Tampere to renovate day care centres due to problems with indoor air quality
The City of
Tampere is preparing to renovate a number of day care centres in 2013 and 2014
due to indoor air quality issues. Air quality assessments carried out at the
centres show that immediate remedial action is required at 13 sites across the
city. In addition, further assessments are currently being carried out at
a further eight day care centres. The results of these assessments will be
available by the summer.

At its meeting on 21 January 2013, the City Council of Tampere appointed
City Councillor, Doctor of Social Sciences Anna-Kaisa Ikonen (NCP) as

Tampere Vocational College Tredu to begin operations on 1 January 2013
On 9 Nov 2012, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture made the
decision to transfer the authorisation to provide education from the Pirkanmaa
Educational Consortium (PIRKO) to the City of Tampere as of 1 January 2013. Consequently, one of the
largest vocational colleges in Finland, ‘Tredu’, i.e. the Tampere Vocational College,
will be formed. The merger of Tampere College
(TAO) and the Pirkanmaa Educational Consortium into one school providing
vocational education and training is a part of the implementation activities in
accordance with the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture’s strategy on
vocational education and training.

A new exhibition at Vapriikki: Mummies – a Journey to the Hereafter
On 16 November, a new exhibition on the
cult of death in ancient Egypt opens at Vapriikki. Some truly unique artefacts
have been placed on loan for this exhibition, such as authentic Egyptian
mummies, sarcophagi, ritual objects, jewellery and everyday utility articles.
These have been provided by the Egyptian Museum in Florence, Italy.

Full houses at Festival of the Year
Friends of jazz found
their way to Tampere Jazz Happening on the first weekend of November. Majority
of the concerts were sold out. The 31st Happening featured 26 bands,
more than 120 musicians, and 17 different nationalities. The programme
presented a broad range of jazz and numerous international stars took the
stage.

The Palatsinraitti bridge to be opened on the evening of Friday 26 October
The Palatsinraitti pedestrian and light transport bridge connecting the
areas of Finlayson and Tampella will be taken into use with grand

Everything is illuminated in Tampere
This week, Tampere will play host to various light events over the
course of five days. The Valon taikaa (‘the magic of light’) event will
take place at Särkänniemi from 24 to 28 October. The Näsinneula
observation tower will be lit with a light installation every evening

European Mobility Week campaigns for getting moving sustainably
The European Mobility Week is celebrated annually on
16–22 September. In 2012, the patron of the theme week will be musician
Paleface, alias Karri Miettinen. During the week, European cities and

allow people to get moving more sustainably. In Tampere, scenery biking, bike
maintenance for students and a “pimp my hybrid bus” competition are on offer.

Festival of the Year 2012 Tampere Jazz Happening continues on its uncompromising path

Jazz Happening is Festival of the Year 2012. The title was granted by Finland
Festivals, a collaboration forum for Finnish cultural events. The choice was

The Moomins are moving
Tampere Art Museum’s Moominvalley presenting Tove Jansson’s original
Moomin works is moving. The museum that has been located in the basement
of the Tampere Main Library Metso for the past 25 years will be closed
due to removal starting from 26.11.2012. Moominvalley will open again on
the first week of January 2013 on the ground floor of Tampere Art
