Morning and afternoon activities

Who are they designed for?

Morning and afternoon activities (before and after school activities) are designed for pupils in grades 1-2. All pupils in special education from pre-primary to grade 9 are offered afternoon club activities that are specially designed for them. The activities of the City of Tampere are organised predominantly at schools and city youth club premises. Enrolment in a group is valid for one term. Applications are to be sent in January.

Morning and afternoon activities provide parents with an alternative way to arrange child care on weekdays. Activities are offered for approximately 2000 children each term.

In addition to the Department of Education, there are other providers of services, for example the parishes and the settlement movement. The City of Tampere subsidises these activities and the organisers’ training and the city also supervises the activities.

What kind of activities?

Activities in the morning and afternoon groups include supervised outdoor activities, play and hobby activities, doing homework for school, games and a snack. Each group has its own daily and weekly programme, which is a combination of free playing and guided activity.

The groups also have joint activities, parties and excursions. The groups are run by professionals in youth work, social services or another appropriate training. Additional personnel is provided by school assistants and trainees.

Children who participate in these activities are covered by an accident insurance during activity time. Any accident occurring when travelling to and from the group is the responsibility of the parents.

Action time and group sizes

Afternoon activities are organised on school days between 12.00 and 17.00 hours. Morning activities are organised if there are enough applications from interested children and the premises can be provided.

Action time in the morning is from 08.00 to 10.00 hours depending on the timetable of the school day. A snack is served at around 14.00 hours.

Part-time participation
Participation in the group activities is also possible on a part-time basis,
either on 3 afternoons per week (max. 5 hrs per day), or for 3 hours every day.

Activities during school year 2012 - 2013
The autumn term starts on 13.8.2012 and ends on 21.12.2012. The spring term starts on 7.1.2013 and ends on 31.5.2013.

Group sizes
There can be 10 - 30 children in one group. Group sizes vary according to the size of the premises. If there are more applications than places in the group, first grade pupils are given priority and other places will be offered to second grade pupils depending on their need of the activity and care.

Participation in morning-only activities costs 40 euros per month, whereas the fee for August is 20 euros.

The charge for part-time participation is 60 euros per month (in August 30 euros).

If there is more than one child from the same family participating in morning and afternoon activities, there will be a different fee for the elder sister, depending on the time of participation.
