At the centre of communications
The word 'media' is the plural of the Latin word 'medium', meaning way or means of communication. Today, we are constantly submerged in sounds and images; it is virtually impossible to imagine a quiet space without any messages. The majority of human interaction is based on non-verbal cues, the oldest form of communication. Logos, symbols, even the clothes we wear communicate our values and position to our surrounding environment. Verbal communication can take place in written form or through the spoken word; it conveys meanings. The messages of sound, images, speech and writing open up through the unique collection of items at the museums in Tampere. The 'Intro' section describes the meanings behind the symbols seen on Finnish wall-rugs, mysterious hieroglyphs and ancient rune staves. |
