Children's Literature

The institute's main goal is to procure a complete collection of the children's books published in Finland. It collects all printed Finnish children's and youth books, their translations and important studies. At present the collection is comprised of over 65.000 volumes of children's books and 5.300 reference books. The institute has a special collection of Estonian children's books in addition to those books donated by Finland's own Tove Jansson.
Information services
The SNI personnel strives to assist people who request information about children's literature and its research. Clients will also be guided in the use of the SNI information sources upon request.
Illustrations and exhibitions
SNI houses works from the artistic estate of Finland's best known children's writer and illustrator, Camilla Mickwitz, as well as original works by illustrators Maija Karma, Riikka Juvonen, Sari Airola, Markus Majaluoma, Hannu Taina ja Riitta Uusitalo. The institute organizes exhibitions of books and illustrations on the premises as well lends exhibitions of this kind.
As of 2008 the institute's publication series included twenty-nine publications. The SNI has also issued three facsimile editions. At the institute one can find posters and post cards depicting characters and scenes from Finnish children's literature.

Research
One of the institute's aims is to support the research of children's literature in all possible ways. Every three years the SNI arranges a special meeting for researchers. The institute co-operates with many other institutes, organizations and researchers all over the world.
