The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum provides consulting and development services for local culture museums, advises local culture societies, publicises local cultural work and develops cooperation in the field of local culture.
The Museum’s local culture expert provides guidance for the roughly one hundred local history museums in the Tampere Region, and develops the museum services in the region in cooperation with other bodies.

The main focus is on advising museums which receive discretionary state subsidies. The Provincial Museum makes advisory visits to museums run by municipalities and civic societies, and its telephone consultation service is also available to the keepers of private museum collections.
The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum also functions as a data bank for local museums. It offers guidance in issues involving the storage and cataloguing of items as well as the planning and funding of exhibitions. It can also carry out commissioned projects for the further development or the documentation of the local museum’s collections.
Advice on the renovation of museum buildings is provided in the first
instance by the unit’s built heritage engineer and building researcher.
Advice for the maintenance and care of objects is also available from
conservators, and advice on cataloguing photographs is given by the
Museum’s photo archive.
Small local museums often struggle with similar problems, and it is
therefore important to develop cooperation between them. The Provincial
Museum organises training for local museum personnel in the form of
regional museum days, for example. It also publishes a journal,
Museokello (Museum Bell), which is an information bulletin on cultural
environments and museum issues in the Tampere Region.
The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum is currently developing a tailored
database for local museums. The Siiri database is designed for managing
collections. The Museokompassi.fi portal, maintained by the Provincial
Museum, provides basic information on museums in the Tampere Region. We
are happy to receive information of any museum not yet listed in the
portal.
