The Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum is the place to consult if you need information about research on the archaeology and the built environment in the region, or statements on sites of cultural significance.
The Museum provides information and advice on issues concerning conservation, building repairs and the maintenance of archaeological monuments under the Adopt a Monument programme.
The Provincial Museum also provides assistance in the management of local museums. The service is available to privately owned collections and museums run by societies or associations in the Tampere Region. The Museokompassi.fi portal contains information on the region’s museums. The Museum advises on the repair of museum buildings, conservation of objects, the care of photographs and items, cataloguing, and use of the Siiri database. The Museum also organises events such as the annual Regional Museum Day for museum enthusiasts.

The Siiri information system of the Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum is a repository of information on research and includes a database of sites of historical value in the region. Within the scope of data protection legislation, information from the system may be printed out for land owners and others who are interested in the cultural environment. In the near future, a limited version of the Siiri system will be launched online.
The Provincial Museum maintains a cultural environment library for use by the authorities, researchers and exhibition organisers. Materials in the library can be searched online in the Piki internet library. Materials in the library are not loaned out, but you can book a time for viewing them in the Museum.
On request, the Museum organises expert training for its customers on topics such as archaeology, prehistory, the built heritage, architecture, cultural landscapes, building conservation, protection practices, etc. It also organises public events, such as the Pirkanmaan alta seminar held every spring to present the results of archaeological field work undertaken in the region, and events in conjunction with the National Archaeology Days and the European Heritage Days in the autumn.
