Maintenance

Street maintenance is an important contributor to the attractiveness of the urban environment. Well-kept streets create a pleasant atmosphere, increase the fluency of traffic and prevent dangerous situations from taking place.

The streets are divided into maintenance categories, which means that their maintenance is based on an order of importance. Both the city and property owners have their own responsibilities in street maintenance. The duties of property owners include removing all snow and ice that makes moving on foot difficult and ensuring that pavements and streets – up to the centre line – are not slippery. The city, for its part, is responsible for bicycle lanes and plants. The street maintenance responsibilities of property owners are determined in the Street Maintenance and Sanitation Act (HE 354/1992).
