Tampere-Mwanza project aims at diminishing the gap between northern and southern municipalities by opening a channel for co-operation between the authorities of these two cities.
The co-operation between the cities of Tampere and Mwanza goes back to late 1980's when the Tampere City Council took a decision to establish a relationship with Mwanza. A new step was taken in 2002 when Tampere-Mwanza project was accepted to a larger North-South Local Governance Co-operation Programme financed by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
