Tampere-Mwanza Local Governance Cooperation project

Tampere-Mwanza project aims at diminishing the gap between northern and southern municipalities by opening a channel for co-operation between the authorities of these two cities.

The co-operation between the cities of Tampere and Mwanza goes back to late 1980's when the Tampere City Council took a decision to establish a relationship with Mwanza. A new step was taken in 2002 when Tampere-Mwanza project was accepted to a larger North-South Local Governance Co-operation Programme financed by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The main objectives of Tampere-Mwanza project:

· Capacity building of municipal administrations

· Enhancing local democracy

· Improving environmental management

· Increasing mutual understanding through cultural exchange

Project components:

· Fire Brigade co-operation

· Teachers' training and school co-operation

· ICT-training

· Councillors' coperation and local democracy

· Waste management and environmental conservation
