Electronic prescriptions to be used in Pirkanmaa as of April-May

31.01.2012 11:01

The City of Tampere will begin using electronic prescriptions on 2 April, making it the first municipality in Pirkanmaa to take them into use. The other municipalities in Pirkanmaa will follow over the course of April and May. The Pirkanmaa Hospital District will switch to electronic prescriptions at the turn of the year.

With the arrival of the electronic prescription, doctors will provide patients with instructions in paper format instead of the paper prescriptions currently in use. The instructions for patients will include the names of the medications and dosage instructions. The medication can be picked up from any pharmacy by showing either the instructions or the patient’s Kela card. Showing the Kela card ensures that the patient will receive a reimbursement for the cost of the medication.
The electronic prescription system should be in use at all pharmacies in Finland by the end of March.

The pharmacy retrieves the electronic prescription made by the doctor from the national Prescription Centre where it has been saved.
Doctors and nurses treating a patient can also use the Prescription Centre to see all of the medication being taken by the patient at a given time, in order to ensure that the patient does not receive the same medication twice under a different brand name or medications that have negative side effects when combined. The patient must provide permission for doctors and nurses to access this information.

People 18 years of age or older may view their own information in the Prescription Centre at www.kanta.fi. Personal internet banking codes or an ID card with a chip can be used to sign in to the service.

The electronic prescription is usually valid for one year and can be renewed at a pharmacy or healthcare centre.

Patients may always decide for themselves whether they wish to receive an electronic or traditional prescription.

The preliminary schedule for implementing the electronic prescriptions in Pirkanmaa municipalities is the following:
- Tampere 2 April
