green and blooming and the city streets are brimming with happy vacationers.
Summer has begun in the city. Tampere offers lots to see and experience in
the summer for people of all ages.
Vapriikki prepares for the arrival of the terracotta army
The exhibition called The Terracotta Army and Treasures of the First
Emperors of China will open at Vapriikki on 14 June. Also known as the
eighth wonder of the world, the terracotta army is a UNESCO world
heritage site. In addition to the tomb’s eerie guards and the First
Emperor’s bronze chariot, the exhibition at Vapriikki displays other
tomb discoveries and imperial treasures from the Qin and Han dynasties,
including precious jade, gold, and bronze objects. Some of the
discoveries were made during the most recent excavations, carried out
Water temperature at beaches available online
As in previous
years, information about the water temperatures at beaches is once again
available this summer on the city’s website and in mobile format. Tampere City
Sports Services measures the temperature of water on weekdays at beaches that
are supervised by personnel. This summer, water temperature information is
available for the beaches of Eliander, Hervantajärvi, Kaukajärvi-Riihiniemi,
Peltolampi, Pyynikki, Suolijärvi, Suomensaari, Kämmenniemi, Tahmela and
Finland’s biggest vocal music festival starts on Wednesday 5 June
Vocal Music Festival takes place this week, 5–9 June. Over 2300 singers will be
performing from Wednesday to Sunday.
The Night of the Museums in Tampere on 25 May at 6pm–midnight
The Night of the Museums takes place in Tampere on
Saturday, 25th May 2013. The museums and other cultural institutions taking
part in this nocturnal event offer a wide range of exhibitions, guided tours
and other programme events until midnight. You can enjoy theatre, have your
photo taken for a postcard, test your knowledge in quizzes and meet police
officers. If you like music, you can attend the concert to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of Werstas, on Väinö Linnan aukio.
Four of Tampere’s health centres will be open all summer long
During the quieter summer vacation season, the City of Tampere will
centralise its health centre operations to four centres. The Hatanpää,
Hervanta, Tammelakeskus and Tesoma health centres will remain open for
the whole summer.
Immigrant Advice Centre closed for two months
Immigrant Advice Centre, located on Tuomiokirkonkatu, will close its doors on 6
May for two months due to plumbing renovation work. Unfortunately, while the
centre is closed it will not be able to dispense advice via email or by phone.

Guarantee came into force at the beginning of this year. The City of Tampere
started to fulfil the objectives of the Guarantee, defined by the Finnish
Government, by establishing a working group tasked with improving services
directed at unemployed young people. However, the weak economic situation
complicates this work. According to the chairman of the working group, Deputy
Mayor Olli-Poika Parviainen, the City should only make cost reductions that
would not impair the fulfilment of the Youth Guarantee.

It is easy

City to commence grit removal
The City of Tampere is due begin the process of removing
grit from the city's streets in the week commencing 8 April 2013, weather
unusually cold weather and sub-zero night time temperatures in March have led
to delays with the removal process. At present, the process has been delayed by
approximately two weeks. City centre
thoroughfares will be the first stretches of road to undergo the process. This week, a calcium solution has been
applied to road surfaces, particularly along major thoroughfares and bus routes
as well as at bus stops, to bind dust particles.

The application period for next autumn’s
morning and afternoon activities for schoolchildren begins in Tampere.
Applications from pupils commencing grades one and two will
be accepted 4-15 April 2013.
Tampere wins cycling award
The Finnish Suomi Pyöräilee (Finland Cycles) Executive Committee has
granted the annual Best Local Authority for Cycling Award to Tampere.
This was due to Tampere’s commitment to promoting access to cycling and
improving cycling infrastructure over the past two years. The award was
presented to City representatives at the Suomi Pyöräilee (Finland
Cycles) event in Helsinki on 8 March 2013. At the event, Tampere was
represented by Deputy Mayor Pekka Salmi and Transport Engineer Timo
City of Tampere to renovate day care centres due to problems with indoor air quality
The City of
Tampere is preparing to renovate a number of day care centres in 2013 and 2014
due to indoor air quality issues. Air quality assessments carried out at the
centres show that immediate remedial action is required at 13 sites across the
city. In addition, further assessments are currently being carried out at
a further eight day care centres. The results of these assessments will be
available by the summer.

Tampere’s cultural destinations to be introduced at the Culture Fair at Metso on Saturday 16 February
Culture Fair, now taking place for the fifth time, will once again fill the
Main Library Metso on 16 February 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when nearly all
of Tampere’s theatres and museums as well as several event organisers arrive to

City of Tampere mental health and substance abuse services to be renewed in the autumn
The City of Tampere will begin renewing its mental health and substance abuse services this coming autumn.
"Transforming the services is necessary as the number of patients is
growing continuously and the problems patients face are changing,"
comments Päivi Kiviniemi, Deputy Chief Physician in charge of substance
abuse and mental health services.
Chinese living in Tampere to be introduced to Pirkanmaa companies

City Council appoints Deputy Mayors
At its meeting on 28 January 2013, the City Council of Tampere chose
four Deputy Mayors for the 2013–2016 council term. The new Deputy Mayors
are Mikko Aaltonen (Left Alliance) and Pekka Salmi (Social Democratic
Party). Leena Kostiainen (National Coalition Party) and Olli-Poika
Parviainen (Green Party) will continue in their positions.
Anna-Kaisa Ikonen appointed new Mayor of Tampere as expected
At its meeting on 21 January 2013, the City Council of Tampere appointed
City Councillor, Doctor of Social Sciences Anna-Kaisa Ikonen (NCP) as
the new Mayor of the city. She was the candidate selected by the
National Coalition Party and Swedish People’s Party’s party group, the
Social Democrats’ party group, the Green League’s party group and the
Left Alliance’s party group. The decision was unanimous.
Brand new Guide for Event Organisers is published
The Event Office of City of Tampere has published a brand new, up-dated Guide for Event Organisers. The up- dated Guide has been produced in cooperation with the authorities of the City and the police. The Guide is available both in English and Finnish and you can explore it as a printed booklet or as an electronic version that you can browse online.

Christmas memo – City of Tampere services during the holidays
The Christmas holidays cause certain changes in the opening hours of
municipal services. City of Tampere offices and customer service points
are closed 24-26 December 2012 and on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2013.
City libraries are closed during Christmas and on New Year’s Day. The
opening hours of museums and indoor swimming pools will also be affected
by the holiday season. Public transport in Tampere will operate
according to holiday timetables during Christmas and on New Year’s Day.
A residential event for immigrants
The City of Tampere will organise a discussion for immigrants on
Tuesday, 18 December 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will take place at
the City Council Room (Valtuustosali) at the Central Office Building
(Keskusvirastotalo), Aleksis Kiven katu 14 C, 5th floor.
Four small health centres closed during the turn of the year
The City of Tampere will keep four small health centres closed during
the last week of this year and the first week of the new year, 24.12.2012 - 6.1.2013. The
centres which will be closed are Atala, Kämmenniemi, Lielahti and
Budget for 2013: Tampere aims to secure the current service level despite challenges
Preparations for Tampere’s budget for the coming
year have been overshadowed by uncertainty in the development of the European
economy as well as the darkening outlook for municipal economy. In spite of
this, Tampere is striving to secure its current level of services. The level of
investments will also remain high.
Tampere Event Office webpage is now available in English
The Event Office of City of Tampere was established in
August 2011. Now the Office has been offering its services for event organizers
for over a year. The very first year of the Office and its services was
celebrated with brand new webpage. It is now also available in English. You can

Service break on the City of Tampere’s website on the evening of 26 November
A service break will take place on the external
websites of the City of Tampere on Monday 26 November 2012. The break will last
for approximately 45 minutes. It will take place between 10:15 p.m. and
midnight and is due to maintenance work on the city’s communications network. The
www.tampere.fi and other websites cannot be browsed during the
Tampere Vocational College Tredu to begin operations on 1 January 2013
On 9 Nov 2012, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture made the
decision to transfer the authorisation to provide education from the Pirkanmaa
Educational Consortium (PIRKO) to the City of Tampere as of 1 January 2013. Consequently, one of the
largest vocational colleges in Finland, ‘Tredu’, i.e. the Tampere Vocational College,
will be formed. The merger of Tampere College
(TAO) and the Pirkanmaa Educational Consortium into one school providing
vocational education and training is a part of the implementation activities in
accordance with the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture’s strategy on
vocational education and training.
A new exhibition at Vapriikki: Mummies – a Journey to the Hereafter
On 16 November, a new exhibition on the
cult of death in ancient Egypt opens at Vapriikki. Some truly unique artefacts
have been placed on loan for this exhibition, such as authentic Egyptian
mummies, sarcophagi, ritual objects, jewellery and everyday utility articles.
These have been provided by the Egyptian Museum in Florence, Italy.
City responsible for the winter maintenance of driveways and bicycle ways, property owners for pavements
The city and occupants of property each
have their own responsibilities for the winter maintenance of routes. The main
principle is that occupants of property are responsible for the winter
maintenance of pavements next to their plots and the city is responsible for
the driveways of streets as well as pedestrian and bicycle ways. This
division of work is based on the Maintenance and Cleaning Act.
Full houses at Festival of the Year
Friends of jazz found
their way to Tampere Jazz Happening on the first weekend of November. Majority
of the concerts were sold out. The 31st Happening featured 26 bands,
more than 120 musicians, and 17 different nationalities. The programme
presented a broad range of jazz and numerous international stars took the

The first performances of Tampere Jazz Happening are on Thursday 1
November. The programme takes a head start when Rakka plays an acoustic
set in the Main Library of Tampere at noon. Their actual showtime in
Happening is at Telakka venue on Saturday 3 November at 10.30 pm.
The Terveysnysse Health Bus will dedicate a week to providing seasonal influenza vaccinations for adults
This year, the City of Tampere will concentrate the provision of seasonal influenza vaccinations for groups at risk to the Terveysnysse Health Bus. The Bus will tour the city from Monday, 12 November to Saturday, 17 November. In addition, on Saturday, 17 November vaccinations will be provided at seven of the City’s health centres.
Tampere asks about the functionality of social and health services
Tampere requests feedback from the customers that have used social and
primary health care services during 2012. You may answer the attitude
survey on the Internet from 29 Oct to 11 Nov 2012.
The Palatsinraitti bridge to be opened on the evening of Friday 26 October
The Palatsinraitti pedestrian and light transport bridge connecting the
areas of Finlayson and Tampella will be taken into use with grand
festivities on Friday 26 October. The opening ceremony, which starts at 6
p.m., features a magnificent light show, Sillan synty (‘The birth of
the bridge’), on the bridge over the Tammerkoski rapids.
Everything is illuminated in Tampere
This week, Tampere will play host to various light events over the
course of five days. The Valon taikaa (‘the magic of light’) event will
take place at Särkänniemi from 24 to 28 October. The Näsinneula
observation tower will be lit with a light installation every evening
this week from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Tampere Illuminations weeks will
open on Sunday 28 October at 7 p.m. with fireworks at the Central Market
Jarno Vesala is the Young Artist of the Year 2013
Jarno Vesala has been selected as the Young Artist of the Year 2013.
Vesala will receive 20,000 euros grant awarded by the City of Tampere and
supported by Nokia plc, own publication as well as an opportunity to hold
private exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum.
67 councillors to be elected in municipal elections
In the municipal
elections, 67 councillors will be elected to the City Council of Tampere for
the 2013–2016 term. The municipal elections will take place on 28 October 2012.
It is also possible to vote in the municipal elections in advance from 17 to 23

Tampere celebrates its 233rd birthday
This year, Tampere will celebrate its 233rd birthday with various events on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September 2012.
European Mobility Week campaigns for getting moving sustainably
The European Mobility Week is celebrated annually on
16–22 September. In 2012, the patron of the theme week will be musician
Paleface, alias Karri Miettinen. During the week, European cities and
municipalities will be organising events as well as taking permanent action to
allow people to get moving more sustainably. In Tampere, scenery biking, bike
maintenance for students and a “pimp my hybrid bus” competition are on offer.
In the street biking event, guidelines for biking right in the city centre are
Festival of the Year 2012 Tampere Jazz Happening continues on its uncompromising path
Jazz Happening is Festival of the Year 2012. The title was granted by Finland
Festivals, a collaboration forum for Finnish cultural events. The choice was
argued with Happening’s role in enriching the Finnish jazz scene. The 31st
Happening will present a total of 26 acts, of which 18 are international. The
festival will be held on 1–4 November 2012.
Santtu-Matias Rouvali appointed Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra
Santtu-Matias Rouvali has been announced as the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO). His three year term will begin in August 2013 and include at least eight concerts with the orchestra per year.
The Moomins are moving
Tampere Art Museum’s Moominvalley presenting Tove Jansson’s original
Moomin works is moving. The museum that has been located in the basement
of the Tampere Main Library Metso for the past 25 years will be closed
due to removal starting from 26.11.2012. Moominvalley will open again on
the first week of January 2013 on the ground floor of Tampere Art
Museum, at the address Puutarhakatu 34, a ten-minute walk from the
Brighter Perspectives for Science and Technology Museums, CIMUSET 2012 in Tampere
This year's CIMUSET conference is being held in Finland, in Tampere and
the Helsinki area, in the last week of August (28 - 31.8.2012). The
conference theme, ‘Brighter Perspectives for Science and Technology
Museums’, will challenge all of us at our respective museums to network,
educate, and communicate with our audiences. The conference programme
extensively addresses the various aspects of the work done in science
and technology museums.
