Join in the joyful Christmas festivities in Tampere! During the Christmas season, many events are organised in our city. The traditional Christmas Market in the Central Square with its cabins, merchants and events is bigger, cosier and more beautiful than ever.

The opening ceremony of the Christmas Market will take place in the Tampere Central Square on 9 December at 5 p.m. The main act will be Tomi Metsäketo and the Pirkanpojat choir, and the fire artists of Circus Lumica will bring warmth and fast-paced action to the ceremony. The Christmas Market will be opened by Mayor Timo P. Nieminen, along with the representatives of Tampere’s twin cities, Mayor Reinheard Pass from Essen and Deputy Mayor Berthold Brehm from Chemnitz. Merchants from both of these twin cities are again coming to the Christmas Market to sell their popular handicraft products, roasted almonds and Christmas pastries.

Another major event is the Lasten Päivä children’s event organised by Tallink Silja on 17 December. The performers at the event include Herra Heinämäen Lato-orkesteri and Moomintroll, for instance. All in all, the Christmas Market and the surrounding areas will be teeming with daily events. The innovation for this year is an event marquee which serves as the venue for the TuliHile Christmas circus by Jakob’s Circus. You can also find Santa Claus in the event marquee whenever he is not mingling with people in the marketplace. The Old Church will carry on the annual tradition of organising Christmas carol singing events.

Christmas aromas, flavours and atmosphere will be brought to the Christmas Market with Christmas decorations, light garlands and Finnish and German merchants. In the 50 and more cabins at the Christmas Market, you can find both Finnish handicraft products and Central European decorations. In addition to the merchants and Christmas spirit, the market offers various services, including a marketplace café selling the legendary doughnuts from the Pyynikki Observation Tower Café, the Arctic-Kota hut where you can enjoy the crackle and warmth of a fire as well as tasty sausages and the Joulukahvila café serving delicious snacks and steaming drinks for visitors of the market. If you have any questions or issues, feel free to contact one of the Christmas Market elves circulating amongst the visitors. The Christmas Market will close on 23 December.

Proclamation of Christmas peace

The closing ceremony of the Christmas Market will take place on 23 December. In the ceremony, Christmas peace will be proclaimed for the City of Tampere at the balcony of the City Hall at 7 p.m. The programme also features Christmas music and singalong. Christmas peace will be proclaimed by City Lawyer, Jouko Aarnio.

Christmas at Finlayson and light events

The old Finlayson factory area will celebrate its 191st Christmas. The Christmas village at Tallipiha (Stable Yards) will feature glögg (mulled wine), artisans, a Christmas market as well as all the stable yard animals. The Children’s Cultural Centre Rulla will organise daily Christmas arts and crafts sessions for children. At Taidewerstas Wärjäämö, the winter play “Kaamos” will be performed seven times during the Christmas season.

This year, the traditional light displays in Tampere city centre are accompanied by several new light events. At the darkest time of the year you can see the city in a whole new light, thanks to the brightening effects of the Valovoimainen Pirkanmaa (“Brilliant Pirkanmaa”) project. The Hämeenpuisto, Market Hall, Christmas Market, Tammerkoski and Pyynikki areas will each have a turn to play host to the light installations. The different sites will create a ribbon of light. The lights will shine at one site for 1 to 2 weeks at a time in the evenings, after which they will move on to the next. The chain of events will continue into the new year, ending on 8 January.
