Sports competitions in schools
Competitions what and who for?

Competitions are divided into three age categories:
1) grades 3-6
2) grades 7-9
3) upper secondary school students and students in vocational education and training
Competitions are also open to those pupils who were born in the same year as the pupils in grade 3. The age limit is 20 years for participants in the competitions in the secondary upper schools and vocational education and training.
Pupils in grades 3-6 compete in the following ball games: football, ice hockey, floorball (salibandy), basketball and Finnish baseball (pesäpallo). In individual sports, competitions are arranged in skiing, cross-country running, athletics, orienteering, swimming and slalom. Pupils in grades 7-9, as well as in the secondary upper schools and vocational education and training, compete in football, ice hockey (grades 8 and 9 only), basketball, volleyball, Finnish baseball and floorball. In individual sports there are competitions in cross-country skiing, cross-country running, orienteering, swimming and slalom.
Organisers
Competitions in comprehensive, secondary upper schools and vocational institutions are organised in cooperation with the Department of Exercise and the Sector for Day Care and Education. The activities are financed by the Sector for Day Care and Education, whereas the practical arrangements are taken care of by the Department of Exercise in cooperation with the schools. The City of Tampere works in active cooperation with local clubs and nationwide organisations and referees of the different sports. Their contribution to the work is indispensable.
The planning, development and organisation of the competitions are implemented by responsible exercise instructors of the City of Tampere in cooperation with the teachers members of the Committee on student sports.
