Students have to attach with their residence permit an explanation of their health insurance in validity i.e. of such an insurance that covers the same treatments and expenses as does the municipal health care system and the system of health insurance.
The granting of a residence permit requires that the student has a valid insurance of a trustful and stable insurance company or establishment.
- During studies lasting less than two years, the student must have an insurance that covers medical expenses in principle up to 100 000 Euros.
- If the estimated duration of studies is at least two years, the student usually obtains a municipal residence in Finland and is admitted into the system of municipal health services. In that case, it is sufficient that the insurance covers in first place the cost of medicines (in practice, also the doctor’s fee and expenses relating to treatments and examinations) in principle up to 30 000 Euros.
A student must have a valid insurance when he/she is applying for a residence permit, or the permit cannot be granted.
A residence permit cannot be granted for a period exceeding the period of validity of the insurance.
