Hospital or institutional residential care is indicated when age or illness reduce an individual's ability to cope with activities of daily living, thus making it impossible to live at home.

Koukkuniemi Home for the Elderly

Geriatric hospital and institutional care in Tampere is provided in the following places:

Hatanpää Hospital Department of Psychogeriatrics, which provides care for the elderly with mental disorders and dementia.

Kauppi Hospital, which mainly provides care for the elderly in home nursing and patients requiring long term therapy or institutional care. The hospital has inpatient wards, an outpatient unit, a polyclinic and a ward to support patients returning home.

In Tampere, geriatric residential care is provided in Koukkuniemi Home for the Elderly and other privately owned residential homes.

Hospitals

Kauppi Hospital has a Geriatric polyclinic, where they examine reasons and possible treatments for geriatric disorders among the elderly. A doctor's referral is required for an examination.

Rauhaniemi Hospital consists of six wards, which provide care for the acutely ill residents of Koukkuniemi. One of the wards also provides rehabilitation for orthopedic patients (mainly hip fractures) from Koukkuniemi and other institutional residents of Tampere and also for patients outside of institutional care.
The wards of Rauhaniemi Hospital are located within the Koukkuniemi Home for the Elderly.

Koukkuniemi Home for the Elderly provides short and long term care for the residents of Tampere.

Short-term care is available for aged residents who need, in addition to home care, basic care and social therapy.
Short-term care aims at preventing long-term institutional care. A place of care may also be organized for the disabled or sick person, if their parent or caretaker is in need of time off or vacation.

Long-term care (over 3 months) is available to aged residents of Tampere, those whose care cannot be organized through the Home Care Department and its support services or whose care cannot be functionally provided at their own homes.

Long-term care includes doctors’ consultations, necessary examinations, specialist services and dental care.
