Family care and child protection institutions

Family care in a temporary family

Valokuva: Nuori tyttö.

Family care means organizing the care and education of a child outside child’s own home in a temporary home.
In temporary families, children obtain family-like care with close and permanent human relations.

Family care can be organized in various ways: the child can be cared for in a support family, a shelter home, or in short or long term family care.
A temporary home suitable to needs is chosen for the child.

The recruitment and training of new temporary families is organized by the Luotsi team.

Family homes and exterior child protection institutions

A child in need of temporary care is initially placed in family care or family support centre in Tampere, which is near the child’s own family.

However, in order to find the best suitable care, it is relevant to place the child in either: a private professional family home, an institution of the municipal federation or in a public children’s home. Depending on the child’s needs, care may be short or long term.

When care is provided in a family home or an exterior child protection institution, it is organized as a chargeable service, with the municipal authority, not the client or child’s family paying for the service.

The Luotsi team together with the concerned family and a social welfare worker find the most suitable service or care place for the child or adolescent.
