The quality of tap water in Tampere is well above the health requirements and quality recommendations set for drinking water. Groundwater accounts for over 30% of tap water. Water is at its best when the water in the pipes is replaced by new water fairly often. It is therefore advisable to let the water run for a moment before drinking it, especially in the morning.
Tampere has 36 beaches whose water quality is monitored during the swimming season. The microbiological water quality in the beaches is usually good.
The aim of water protection is to prevent detrimental changes in
waterways and correct any damage. The Environmental Protection
Department promotes water protection and the reduction of scattered
pollution. In accordance with the plan on waterway monitoring, the
Environmental Protection Department collects water samples from the
waterways of Tampere twice a year.
The surface area of Tampere
is 24% water and there are some 180 lakes. Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi are
the largest lakes in terms of their area. The quality of lake water is
usually good.
Waste water in Tampere is treated mainly at the waste water treatment plants of Viinikanlahti and Rahola.
