Nature conservation areas are there for everyone to enjoy. You can hike in these areas and explore their flora and fauna. Nature conservation areas enrich urban nature and enable educational and research activities.
Tampere has 15 areas that are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. Six of these are located close to the centre, the best-known areas being Pyynikki and Viikinsaari Island. The nature conservation areas of Tampere represent fairly different types of vegetation from old natural forests to herb-rich forests and juniper fields. A few areas have been protected due to the endangered plants growing there.
Some of the areas reserved for recreational use have nature trails and vantage points for admiring the scenery.
