Forests

The City of Tampere owns a total of 7,500 hectares of forest. This figure includes recreational forests, commercial forests and areas reserved for hiking, which are situated in Teisko and outside of Tampere in Posio, Ylöjärvi, Vilppula and Ruovesi, to mention but a few.

Forest

A significant proportion of the forests is located close to the city centre. The forests are used actively by the residents for recreational purposes, and they are an inherent part of the scenery both in the suburbs and by the roads. The rights and responsibilities of those travelling through forests owned by the city or a private landowner are determined by the Finnish legal concept of “everyman’s right”.

The care of the city’s forests and tree nurseries is the responsibility of Public Space Construction and Maintenance. The Real Estate Office is in charge of forest planning and the selling of timber.

Recreational forests

Recreational forests give all residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, and they also serve as educational areas for schoolchildren and training areas for many sports clubs. The most important recreational forests are those in Kauppi-Niihama, Kalevanharju Ridge, Pyynikki, Epilänharju Ridge and the Lake Suolijärvi area.

Forests suited for camping

The City of Tampere owns forests suited for camping both within the municipality and in other municipalities. The forests situated in the Tampere area are Kintulammi, Taulasalo and Pirttijärvi. The recreational forests near the central city area and the commercial forests in Teisko can also be used for trekking in the event that such areas have interest.

Commercial forests

Commercial forests make up a major proportion of the forests owned by the city in the Teisko-Aitolahti region. There are also commercial forest estates in the municipalities of Kuru, Ylöjärvi and Hämeenkyrö.
