In accordance with Section 34 of the Basic Education Act, the treatment of an accident that has happened at school, during travel to and from school or in school accommodation is free of charge for the pupil. According to this stipulation, the direct costs for an accident, like medical fees and fees for hospital and treatment, are covered.
The Department of Day Care and Education is, under certain conditions, responsible for the treatment of the above-mentioned accidents and the transportation of the patient. An exception to this are pupils in grades 7-10 concerning practical subjects, such as technical and textile work, home economics, practical work in physics and chemistry, introduction-to-working-life periods. For accidents occurring during these classes, pupils are insured by the Turva insurance company.
