Voluntary additional basic education, the former so-called grade 10, is part of basic education and thus free of charge for the student. Additional education is primarily designed for those who are completing the ninth grade but have not been admitted to further studies on the upper secondary level, or to those who need more time for career planning. Additional basic education consists of 1,100 lessons.
Additional education schedules are flexible and they are designed to accommodate the individual plans of the student: instruction and learning environments vary depending on the student’s individual educational plan. This plan is made with the assistance of the teacher in charge of the student. Classes can be composed of the syllabuses of different subjects, subjects from other schools, introduction-to-working-life periods, or they can be devoted to improving the student's grades in the comprehensive leaving certificate.
