Basic education in Tampere is provided mainly in city-maintained comprehensive schools. The City of Tampere arranges educational services for about 15,500 pupils. Approximately 800 pupils among them are instructed in special education.
Compulsory education consists of basic education, i.e. completing grades 1-9. The City of Tampere also provides instruction both for pupils who need special support and for pupils of immigrant origin. It is possible to complete comprehensive school education in other languages than Finnish.
Voluntary additional instruction is provided for pupils who have completed the ninth grade but have not been admitted to upper secondary studies, or for those who need more time for career planning.

After completing comprehensive school, it is possible to study, for instance, in a general upper secondary school or vocational institution.
All instruction given is based on core curricula. It is up to the teacher to choose the methods of instruction and studying on the basis of the core curriculum. The school facilities and classrooms, as well as the number of pupils in the class, have an impact on the planning and arrangements of instruction. Large classes can be divided into two smaller teaching groups, and it is possible to have the help of a school assistant.
A lesson is not always 45 minutes long and there is not always a change of subject after a break. The teacher ensures that each subject is taught for a sufficient number of hours during a school year.
Instruction, books and other learning materials, tools and work materials are free of charge in comprehensive school. The pupils are offered a lunch free of charge on each school day.
In autumn 2010 there were 1,200 teachers and 50 head teachers in Tampere comprehensive schools.
