Comprehensive schools of grades 1-6 operate in Tampere at 38 different locations. There are ten schools for grades 7-9 and six schools for grades 1-9, i.e. complete comprehensive education.

In addition to the schools maintained by the City, comprehensive education is provided by Normaalikoulu, which is a state-maintained school for teacher training. There are also three privately-run comprehensive schools: Tampere Rudolf Steiner school, The Swedish Coeducational School of Tampere (Svenska Samskolan) and Tampere Christian School in Aitolahti.

In Tampere there are eight city-maintained general upper secondary schools and a general upper secondary school for adults. Additionally, there is Normaalikoulun lukio (Teacher Training School of the University of Tampere), which is a state-maintained general upper secondary school. There are also four privately-run general upper secondary schools. In the general upper secondary school of Tampereen lyseon lukio, it is possible to take the international Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

An innovative type of studying with virtual learning environments is offered in the general upper secondary school distance learning programme maintained by Tampere general upper secondary adult school.
