What's it all about?

The foundation of cultural production in Tampere is consists of the hopes and wishes of the city's people as well as the cooperation between different cultural producers of the city. Cultural Affairs organises several events in different parts of the city for different age groups and in different fields of culture.

Tampere is the theatre capital of Finland. There are two large theatres and several smaller theatre groups that operate in the city. Tampere hosts a multitude of festivals in different fields and the city has an active rock scene as well.

The City of Tampere Cultural Affairs is active in promoting children’s culture (for example by running the Children’s Cultural Centre Rulla). The city's cultural affairs is also the organiser of Tampere Music Festival and they are also in charge of the Cultural Centre of the Old Customs House, Viikinsaari Island, Haihara Art Centre, multicultural affairs and services for senior citizens. The unit also organises and maintains cooperation with city districts, international activities and numerous events and other services.

Cultural Affairs has its own gallery called Emil Gallery in the Old Library House. Tampere also has several other excellent galleries and museums for people to enjoy.

One part of the cultural services provided by the Cultural Affairs is The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. This full-size symphonic orchestra performs at Tampere Hall. Tampere Hall hosts a variety of congresses, concerts and other events throughout the year.

The City of Tampere has a residential studio for artists in the city centre. The studio functions on the basis of an artist exchange programme but it can also be hired for artistic use. The City of Tampere also hires a number of other venues for different events. You can also apply for grants or subsidies to help you in arranging a cultural event of your own.
