Travelling to Tampere

The City of Tampere is situated about 170 km up north from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. There are good connections to Tampere whether you are travelling by plane, train or car.

Later this spring 2009 we will send the NOC the inquiry for the information of the detailed travel plans of the team to and from Tampere.

During the EYOF Tampere 2009 games (18 – 25 July) it is free to travel with the accreditation card in the normal Tampere city buses.

There will also be direct bus lines from the OLV to the training and competition venues. The EYOF Tampere 2009 bus station will be established on the parking lot in the middle of the Tampere EYOF OLV (in the Tampere University of Technology) in Hervanta.

There is also a plan to have a so called shuttle line driving from OLV via all the EYOF venues and back to the village. This shuttle line will operate from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to about 9:00 p.m. (depending on the competition schedules) leaving every 30 minutes to one direction.

BY PLANE

Tampere-Pirkkala airport

Tampere-Pirkkala international airport is situated about 17 km/20 minutes from the city centre. It is about 19 km/20 minutes from the airport to the EYOF OLV in Hervanta suburb.

Finnair is flying to Tampere (via Helsinki) from several destinations.

SAS / Blue1 flies straight to Tampere from Stockholm and provides connections to several European destinations via Stockholm.

Airbaltic flies straight to Tampere from Riga and provides connections to several European destinations via Riga.

Ryanair is flying straight to Tampere from Bremen, Dublin, Frankfurt-Hahn, London-Stanstedt, Milan and Riga

If you are flying (route flight or charter flight) to Tampere-Pirkkala airport, the EYOF Tampere 2009 transportation organisation will take care and pay the transportation to the EYOF OLV in Hervanta suburb and to the team’s accommodation. Of course on departure the EYOF Tampere 2009 organisation will take care of the bus transportation to the Tampere-Pirkkala airport.

Helsinki-Vantaa airport

Helsinki-Vantaa is the main international airport in Finland. It is situated 170 km south from Tampere.

All major airlines fly to Helsinki. From Helsinki-Vantaa airport there are good connections to Tampere-Pirkkala airport either by plane or by bus.

Finnair operates a feeder route from Helsinki-Vantaa to Tampere-Pirkkala airport. The flying time from Helsinki to Tampere is only 20 minutes.

From Helsinki-Vantaa airport there is also hourly bus route connections to Tampere www.paunu.fi. Travelling time by bus is 120 to 150 minutes.

The cost of chartered bus transportation is about 500 €/bus/ one direction (own buses for the team) or about 40 €/person/one direction (several small teams in the same bus). Of course this depends on the arrival times of the flights. EYOF Tampere 2009 will send an invoice of these transportation costs to the NOC.

Chartered bus from Helsinki-Vantaa to Tampere OLV

If you are flying to Helsinki-Vantaa airport or to Tampere-Pirkkala airport and want to have a chartered bus service from airport to Olympic village, you can order the bus transportation from the EYOF Tampere 2009 with the following e-form.

Transport of NOC guests

TRANSPORT FROM / TO HELSINKI-VANTAA AIRPORT

As the official EYOF airport is Tampere-Pirkkala, guests arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa airport will have airport buses (PAUNU) to transport themselves to Tampere.

The journey takes approximately 120 minutes and it costs 23,70 € (an adult – one way). Tickets can be bought in the bus.

Paunu Bus schedules

Upon arrival at Helsinki airport, and after collecting the luggage, EYOF volunteers will take guests to the bus stop. Guests will then be welcomed in Tampere and taken to the Sokos hotel Ilves.

Guests will travel similarly for their departure from Helsinki.


TRANSPORT DURING THE EYOF IN TAMPERE

A system of EYOF shuttles and city transport system will work during the Festival. Guests will have a transport desk at the Sokos hotel Ilves at which volunteers will give them full information on how to use it. Volunteers will also be present at the venues to give full information regarding transport back to the hotel or between venues.

Full timetables of shuttles will be provided to all guests upon their arrival. Transport is free upon presentation of the accreditation card.
