Environment

Environment and nature are important to all people and especially to athletes. After all, you need fresh air to breath when you train hard and clean water to swim in. To ensure that the EYOF games do not harm the fragile environment we have developed an environmental programme.

EYOF and environment

The goal of the programme is: The festival will be a pioneer when it comes to environmental issues and will set the standard for all the events in the future.

This means that what we will do in Tampere this summer will have great impact in future, as we will create environmentally friendly Olympic Festivals. So, it is very important that YOU take care of your part in this challenge!

We have three simple targets at EYOF:

NO TO CO2! The emissions will be minimized wherever possible

NO TO WASTE! The material flows of the festival will be kept as narrow as possible

WAKE UP! Environmental awareness of the participants, audience and personnel will evolve

To meet these targets we all have to think what we do during the Olympic Festival. It is easy to do things right, it's not rocket science!

Here's how you can make the EYOF Games eco-friendly:

Use busses when you go about during the games. With the EYOF2009 accreditation card Tampere Public Transport is in free use.

Tag your own water bottle and refill it yourself from any tap in Tampere.

RECYCLE!
At the athletes' village, you can recycle biowaste and the waterbottles
In Finland you get MONEY if you return the bottles or cans bought from the store back to any foodstore. You can get 0.20 € for each bottle or can you return, so look for PULLOPALAUTUS-signs to get money for your sodabottles and sodacans.

ENJOY THE CLEAN AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT OF FINLAND. IF YOU WILL TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH, IT WILL TAKE OF YOU!

Flight emission calculators

As the first municipality in Finland, the city of Tampere has published an Internet calculator to estimate greenhouse gas emissions attributed to air travel. The city uses the calculator to offset the emissions for the flights taken by its employees and municipal delegates. The calculator is only in Finnish. Fortunately, you can find a wide number of different calculators from the Internet.
