76. LEIBLICHER LOGOS
14 women artists from Germany,
9 September - 29 October 1995
"Leiblicher Logos, 14 women artists from Germany"
was a touring exhibition organized by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen
(IFA) in Stuttgart under the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before
coming to Finland, the exhibition was shown in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart
and the Altes Museum in Berlin. From Finland it continued to Oslo and
Gothenburg and from there to Rome.
The exhibition included 80 works, in other words, each
artist was represented by a number of works. The exhibition covered both
floors of the museum.
The organizers responsible for the exhibition were René Block, who is the director of IFA's exhibition
department, as well as Mrs. Erna Haist, who is in charge of exhibitions at the
IFA. Professor
Gudrun Inboden, who is the curator of the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart,
had designed the exhibition and selected the artists.
Artists in the exhibition included Dagmar Demming, Elke Dende, Maria
Eichhorn, Katharina Fritsch, Isa Genzken, Asta Gröting,
Rebecca Horn, Katharina Karrenberg, Karin Sander, Wiebke Siem, Pia Stadtbäumer,
Rosemarie Trockel, Ute Weiss-Leder and Qin Yufen.
"But artists are feminine." (Jean-François Lyotard)
This quotation from Lyotard was curator Gudrun Inboden's
leading principle in planning the exhibition, and it was also presented
to the artists invited to participate in the exhibition, who accepted
this - quite provocative - motto. However, the organizers did not want
to emphasize the social aspect of femininity nor did they want to express
a negative attitude toward male artists; rather, they wanted to emphasize
Lyotard's idea of the femininity of art (weiblich) by selecting only female
artists. On the other hand, they wanted to play with another aspect by
joining the concept of physicality (leiblich) to the concept of femininity
(weiblich). This includes the idea that femininity supports sensuality
and physicality. The name Leiblicher Logos "Fleshly Logos",
borrowed from Lyotard, refers to the feminine and sensual language of
art. Encouraged by Lyotard, the organizers of the exhibition wanted to
emphasize the physicality of art, and in their selection of works they
favoured mixed media art.
