75. SARA HILDÉN PRO ARTE MODERNA,
14 May - 27 August 1995
The objective of the exhibition was to provide, through
an extensive display of works and a wide ranging selection of
documentation,
a diachronic perspective of the Sara Hildén Foundation's collection
of international works of modern art from its inception in 1961 through
the first ten years of its development.
The focus of the exhibition was on the life of Professor
Hildén during the years 1961-1973 and the history of events and
circumstances surrounding her acquisitions of major international works
at that time.
The "Pro Arte Moderna" exhibition was designed
to give the visitor a clear and vivid idea of the way in which the pictures
were acquired. The works on display were therefore accompanied by ample
textual material which also outlined Sara Hildén's experiences
while attending exhibitions abroad. This was done in the hope that the
visitor could follow and feel the fascinating experiences of Sara Hildén
and her close friends and advisors, E.J. Vehmas, Salme Sarajas-Korte and
Leena Peltola when, in the 1960's, they collected what now constitutes
the backbone of the Sara Hildén Foundation's collection of international
modern art.
Not only was the exhibition a tribute to Sara Hildén's
life's work, it was also a documentation of artistic taste and art
dealership.
It showed, too, how new works of art, once the subject of controversy
and ridicule, came in the course of time to belong to the artistic
establishment,
enjoying universal approval and recognition as classics of modern art.
13,007 visitors attended the exhibition, which covered
both floors of the museum.
