74. ENZO CUCCHI,
25 February - 30 April 1995
Enzo Cucchi's (b. 1949 Morro d'Alba, Italy) most recent
drawings were shown in the Sara Hildén Art Museum in the spring
of 1995. Cucchi is one of the most important contemporary Italian
artists.
The exhibition, which was shown in Galleries A and B as well as the Central
Gallery on the upper floor, presented about 100 drawings by Cucchi from
1988-94.
Enzo Cucchi is an artist who became familiar to the public
as a central figure of Transavantguarde, the dominant style in Italy in
the early 1980's.
Although Cucchi is a painter, his extensive production
of drawings has attracted international attention in the past few years.
The exhibition was realized with the enthusiasm of Enzo
Cucchi himself and with the cooperation of the artist's gallery owner
Emilio Mazzoli. The exhibition was mostly based on drawing material which
had not been published before. This was the first time that Enzo Cucchi's
production had been presented in Finland to such a large extent. Cucchi
travelled to Finland to mount the exhibition.
Enzo Cucchi has made numerous outdoor sculptures. He has
worked both as a set designer and book illustrator. Drawing as a technique
is closest to his heart. Cucchi's dynamic drawings often depict imaginary
travels in dreams or day dreams. They include many different symbolic
and metaphorical motifs such as houses, horses, dogs and ships. The works
appeal to the viewer's emotions, and their symbolic, universal pictorial
motifs speak to people across national borders.
Gallery C on the upper floor presented Italian art from
the collection of the Sara Hildén Foundation. Level A on the lower
floor showed Hannu Väisänen's graphic works. Levels B and C
on the lower floor displayed works from the collection of the Sara Hildén
Foundation.
