73. NINA ROOS - JUSSI NIVA,
12 November 1994 - 12 February 1995
In November 1994 the exhibition "Nina Roos Jussi
Niva" was opened in the Sara Hildén Art Museum. The name does
not refer to two separate exhibitions, but a joint exhibition of two young
artists. The works and mounting of the exhibition was planned so that
the exhibition, which was designed by the artists themselves, formed a
harmonious whole.
The exhibition did not have a single thematic point of departure;
rather, the works were engaged in a dialogue concerning the
questions of senses, action and tools, the role of the viewer as well
as space and how it can be limited. The dialogic nature of the exhibition
was also reinforced by the arrangement of the works in the different
rooms.
Nina Roos (b. 1956 Porvoo) is known, above all, for her
delicate colour paintings, which often comprise a series. They are made
on transparent acrylic surfaces or thin zinc plates. The technical and
material solutions emphasize the intensity of colours, the richness and
air of the painted surface as well as the relationship of details to the
whole. Nina Roos's paintings have a strong emotional tone, and they offer
various sensations, such as smells, feelings and tastes.
The production of Jussi Niva (b. 1966 Pello) includes
not only paintings but also photographs, either as independent works or
parts of a painting. Niva studies the absolute, motif-free qualities of
light, colour and space. He offers the viewer the means and stimuli to
consider visual perceptions, but also the means to enjoy what is seen.
He also offers the viewer trips from one colour to another, from the surface
to the depth, from the material to the immaterial.
The exhibition "Nina Roos Jussi Niva" was displayed
on the upper floor of the museum. The lower floor showed works from the
collection of the Sara Hildén Foundation.
