68. RED IN COLOUR,
9 December 1993 - 27 February 1994
"Red in Colour" was an extensive art exhibition
on colour, the colour red in particular. It was especially intended for
kindergarten children and elementary school pupils. However, all those
interested in colour, in seeing and in art, could enjoy the exhibition,
no matter whether they were older children, parents or grand-parents.
The first room was a pedagogic introduction to the exhibition.
It presented the structure of the eye and functioning of the visual sense
as well as the colour system and colour in general. There were examples
of different red colours that artists and children have at their
disposal.
Children could also decide for themselves whether salad belonged to the
classification "red". Or if a dog could be blue.
The second room was full of red drawings, paintings, three-dimensional
works and sculptures from kindergartens in the Tampere area. Can there
really be this much red?
The third room displayed artworks by famous Finnish and
international artists from the collection of the Sara Hildén Art
Museum: in each work the colour red played a different role. Can artists
use red as well as children?
The fourth room housed Jan-Erik Andersson's installation,
The Dream of the Ice Princess. "On a winter evening, a star fell
on the ice-skating track and . . . ."
The aim of the "Red in Colour" exhibition was
to encourage children to observe of their surroundings with open eyes
and to express themselves through colour. The exhibition also showed how
well great artists are able to imitate the rich imagination and unchained
creativity of children - when they work hard at it.
The lower floor of the museum exhibited works from the
Sara Hildén Foundation.
