65. DIE 'BRÜCKE',
21 February - 25 April 1993
German Expressionism from the early 20th century was the
theme for the exhibition shown in the spring of 1993. It belonged to a
series of modern art exhibitions in the Sara Hildén Art Museum.
The exhibition comprised 244 works of art, including watercolours,
drawings and graphic art. Artists included the most central figures of
Die Brücke group, namely, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl
Schmidt-Rottluff,
Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, Max Pechstein, Cuno Amiet, Emil Nolde and Otto
Mueller. The works were from 1905-17.
The exhibition was also the 25th anniversary exhibition
of Berlin's Die Brücke Museum in the spring of 1992. With a few
exceptions,
the works were on loan from the collections of Die Brücke Museum,
and many of them were on display for the first time.
Expressionism emphasized immediate, intensive emotion
and expression. It wanted to break free from the conventions of classical
art. In this respect, the manner of expression represented by Expressionism
and Die Brücke group in particular can be considered to be one of
the central starting points of 20th-century Modernism. These characteristics
are especially emphasized in the drawings and graphic works of Die Brücke
group. Artists in the group also influenced the development of woodcut art: it became a new, important form of graphic art where the traditional
narrative qualities of the picture gave way to the manner of expression.
The exhibition also showed that many of the features of
Finnish Modernism that have been regarded as "national" have
been influenced by German Expressionism and especially the art of Die
Brücke group.
The exhibition covered the entire upper floor of the museum.
A small exhibition of Akseli Gallen-Kallela's work was presented on Level
A on the lower floor. Some of the main works from the museum's own collection
were displayed on Levels B and C on the lower floor.
