54. CONTAINER,
10 March - 14 April 1991

When sculptor Markku Kivinen (b. 1961 Kauhava) and painter Teemu Saukkonen (b. 1954 Savonlinna) started to plan a joint exhibition in the spring of 1988, they did not want to arrange two separate exhibitions in the same gallery as is usually done. The artists strove for deeper cooperation. Kivinen and Saukkonen knew each other well and both could rely on each other's aesthetic taste, perseverance and technical ability to carry out joint ideas.

The exhibition "Container" was opened on the lower floor of the Sara Hildén Museum in March 1991. The artists displayed both their individual and joint works.

A video presentation about the artists and their work comprised part of the exhibition.

Markku Kivinen was originally known for his black boxes with a cranking handle. Movement has been very important in his later works. Kivinen combines different materials in his sculptures, especially steel and wood in recent years.

Teemu Saukkonen is known for his large figurative-expressive paintings, which rely heavily on symbols and different myths. At first he painted realistic figures, that gradually became more anonymous. At one stage he rejected the human figure and started to experiment with three-dimensional objects and shapes made of lead.

A new rearranged exhibition of works belonging to the Sara Hildén Foundation was opened on the upper floor of the museum. Modern international classics were shown in the Central Gallery, international art from the 1960's in Gallery C. Gallery B presented Finnish art from the 1960's and 70's as well as Finnish art from the early years of this century. There was a special exhibition of Kain Tapper's works from the collection of the Sara Hildén Foundation in Gallery A.
