50. CRUCIAL YEARS OF FINNISH MODERNISM 1961 - 1968,
3 March - 22 April 1990

"Crucial Years of Finnish Modernism 1961-1968" was a special exhibition of the Sara Hildén Art Museum in the spring of 1990. The exhibition, which had been organized as an international touring exhibition, consisted of 40 paintings by 24 artists, and it was on display in two galleries on the upper floor of the museum.

The Sara Hildén Art Museum offered the same collection as an exchange exhibition to the Sverdlovsk Art Gallery. The Gallery had presented Russian and Soviet Avant-garde from its own collection in Tampere in 1989. "Crucial Years of Finnish Modernism" was displayed in Sverdlovsk from 25 June to 19 August in 1990.

The Sara Hildén Art Museum had two principles when it started to mount the exhibition for the Sverdlovsk Gallery from its own Finnish collection. On the one hand, the Soviet public should see the type of exhibition that would bring out the character of the Sara Hildén Art Museum; on the other hand, the emphasis should be on a historical period and style that was of central importance in Finnish art.

It can be argued with conviction that the 1960's was one of the most remarkable and interesting periods in the history of Finnish contemporary art. It was characterized by the breakthrough of new international art trends here in Finland and also by the clash and assimilation of these trends with traditional Finnish Modernism, which had already achieved a "national" status. And this process gave birth to a number of new young artists, who gained popularity during the same decade.

The exhibition included works by the following artists:

Lauri Ahlgrén, Göran Augustson, Juhana Blomstedt, Yngve Bäck, Helge Dahlman, Erik Enroth, Mauri Favén, Erkki Heikkilä, Reino Hietanen, Alpo Jaakkola, Kimmo Kaivanto, Aimo Kanerva, Ahti Lavonen, Kauko Lehtinen, Leo Lindsten, Juhani Linnovaara, Ernst Mether-Borgström, Olli Miettinen, Gunnar Pohjola, Ulla Rantanen, Per Stenius, Sam Vanni, Rafael Wardi and Veikko Vionoja.

Finnish and international art from the collection of the Sara Hildén Foundation was presented in the other galleries of the museum.
