48. GUNNAR POHJOLA Paintings, drawings and graphic works 1954-1989,
24 September 1989 - 1 January 1990
The exhibition continued the series of retrospective exhibitions
of Finnish contemporary art. The Sara Hildén Museum had previously
presented the works of the following artists: Erik Enroth (1980), Jaakko
Sievänen (1981), Kimmo Kaivanto (1982), Kauko Lehtinen (1983), Ernst
Mether-Borgström (1983-84), Harry Kivijärvi (1985), Reino Hietanen
(1986) and J.O. Mallander (1986-87).
The Sara Hildén Foundation owns 43 oils paintings,
drawings and graphic works by Gunnar Pohjola (b. 1927 Tyrvää),
and these formed the core of the exhibition. The displayed works were
selected with the aim of giving the visitor an illustrative impression
of the different stages of Gunnar Pohjola's art. The exhibition, which
filled all the upper floor rooms, consisted of nearly 300 works from 1954-1989.
Gunnar Pohjola lived during his childhood in Tampere.
He received his first training in drawing and painting at the Workers'
Institute of Tampere as well as in the drawing sessions of the Tampere
Artists' Association. In 1955 he graduated from the Finnish Academy of
Fine Arts and settled permanently in Tampere. Pohjola has been an active
participant in the art scene of the city.
Gunnar Pohjola, who is deeply rooted in Tampere, has become
one of the leading Finnish contemporary artists. His modest-sized works
speak on behalf of modern, alienated man, who sees himself as a failure
and outsider. The aesthetically perfect and refined techical competence
of Gunnar Pohjola's oils and drawings blends with the humane message of
the picture. This is done in a way which helps to restore a doubter's
belief in the capabilities of the visual arts to convey individual impressions
in the name of the whole era.
