44. GIORGIO MORANDI,
5 November 1988 - 8 January 1989
Painter and graphic artist Giorgio Morandi (b. 1890 Bologna,
d. 1964 Grizzana) is one of the most respected masters in modern Italian
art.
He developed "Pittura metafisica" together with
Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. This "metaphysical"
painting style was an important step leading up to Surrealism at the end
of the 1910's. However, Morandi soon rejected that movement and created
his own style based on his internalized vision.
Morandi's still lifes and landscapes were sophisticated
and poetical. The cultivated atmosphere in the compositions of bottles,
jugs and bowls is emphasized by their rich colours.
Morandi is also known as a brilliant graphic artist, whose
etchings are famous for their clever light effects.
The exhibition was comprehensive, displaying the whole
career and all different styles of the artist. The museum showed 63 oil
painting, 25 watercolours, 25 drawings and 22 graphic works from 1910-64,
altogether 135 works.
The exhibition was arranged under the protection of the
Italian Ministry of Culture and Environment. The main organizer of the
exhibition was the Gallery Comunale d'Arte Moderna "Giorgio Morandi"
Bologna. The exhibition was mounted by Marilena Pasquali, director of
the Giordio Morandi Archive and Research Centre.
The exhibition was first held in the Sara Hildén
Art Museum, after which it transferred to the Hermitage in Leningrad,
and from there it went to the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. The exhibition
was also arranged in Britain, Switzerland, Germany and finally in Italy,
where it celebrated the 100th birthday of Giorgio Morandi.
