35. JOSEPH BEUYS,
14 September - 9 November 1986
In October 1984 Joseph Beuys (b. 1921 Krefeld, d. 1986
Düsseldorf) expressed an interest in arranging an exhibition in the
Sara Hildén Art Museum.
The preparations got under way. The catalogue of the drawings
was already printed and the Finnish itinerary had already been planned
for the artist, when he died on 23 January 1986. The exhibition in the
Sara Hildén Art Museum could, however, be held as originally planned
by Joseph Beuys.
The exhibition comprised 91 drawings from 1947-85, three
sculptures and seven glass cabinets. The exhibition also included six
video presentations and two films, which portrayed Joseph Beuys's artistic
career and status. As the artist had wished, the sculptures were exhibited
on the stone floor of the Central Gallery; the drawings and glass cabinets
were placed individually in the other galleries. The whole upper floor
of the museum was reserved for the exhibition.
The exhibition was arranged in co-operation with The Artists'
Association of Finland. Heiner Bastian, Joseph Beuys' veteran assistant,
helped to mount the works.
At the same time the Goethe Institute in Tampere organized
an exhibition of Joseph Beuys's posters.
