22. KAUKO LEHTINEN,
4 September - 16 October 1983
A retrospective exhibition of the Turku artist Kauko
Lehtinen (b. 1925 Uusikaupunki) was opened on the upper
floor of the museum at the beginning of September.
On show were over 200 drawings and paintings by Kauko
Lehtinen from 1942-83. The major share of the exhibition was
comprised of 69 of Lehtinen's drawings and paintings
belonging to the collection of the Foundation.
In describing the art of Kauko Lehtinen briefly, one
would wish, above all, to pay attention to the visual
richness of the works. Lehtinen's drawings and paintings are
rich in detail and have an exceptionally lively and
sensitive handling of line. The linear characteristics of
his style alternate, even in the same work, with a more
exuberant, painterly form of expression. Lehtinen has always
been interested in using a variety of materials and
techniques in his work Exuberance and variety can also be
found on the thematic level of the works. In incorporating
objects in his work, as well as when using events at home,
friends or his immediate family as inspiration, Kauko
Lehtinen creates a pictorial narrative giving rise to free
association. An imaginative, Surrealist-style association is
linked with realistic detail. The interest and admiration
which Lehtinen has always felt for the great master works of
art history give a special characteristic to the visual
richness of his work.
