15. ANDRÉ LHOTE AND FINLAND,
14 February - 28 March 1982

The exhibition devoted to André Lhote and Finland comprised a total of 133 works, of which 74 were by Finnish artists. André Lhote (b. 1885 Bordeaux, d. 1962 Paris) had a tremendous influence on French painting during the twentieth century. The initial stages of his career were closely linked with the history of Cubism during the 1910s. Lhote was also a very popular teacher.

The objective of the exhibition was to present the works of André Lhote, the academic Cubist, from a wide perspective; works by the most important names in modern French art were therefore included in the exhibition. By seeing these works, the aim was to clarify the phenomena which had influenced Lhote's production as well as the production of artists who had worked in close cooperation with him.

Thirty-five works by Lhote were included in the exhibition. Most of these had been lent by the Art Museum of Bordeaux. The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris lent 3 works, and one work each was lent by the Art Museum of the Ateneum, the Helsinki City Art Museum and the Didrichsen Art Museum.

Paintings by Derain, Metzinger, Villon and Marcoussis were also lent by the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. The Art Museum of the Ateneum also lent paintings by Cézanne, Gauguin and Léger.

Over 40 Finnish artists studied at André Lhote's academy over a period of many years. Of all the Finnish art students who studied under Lhote, and of all the artists who were influenced by Lhote, the following were represented in the exhibition: Uuno Alanko, Eva Cederström, Erik Enroth, Erkki Koponen, Erkki Kulovesi, Kalle Kuutola, Atte Laitila, Eero Nelimarkka, Yrjö Ollila, Matti Petäjä, Unto Pusa, Tapani Raittila, Urpo Wainio, Carl Wargh and Einari Vehmas.

The exhibition was organized in cooperation with The Artists' Association of Finland, and it filled the whole upper floor of the museum with the exception of the Graphics Room, in which some of the museum's own collection of modern classic works were being shown. Works belonging to the museum collection were also on show on the lower floor.
