14 - 29 March 1981
David Hockney (b. 1937 Bradford, England) is one of the
best known exponents of English Pop Art. Hockney's oeuvre comprises both
painting and prints.
A total of 39 engravings completed in 1969-70 for Grimm's
fairytales were on exhibition in Gallery A of the Sara Hildén Art
Museum. The drawings were based on Grimm's fairytales, including, among
others, "Rapunzel", "A Tale of One Who Travelled to Learn
What Shivering Meant", " Old Rinkrank", and "Rumpelstitlskin".
During the exhibition recordings of Finnish translations
of the fairytales and the artist's own comments on the pictures were relayed
over the museum loudspeakers. Four short films on David Hockey's art and
working methods were shown in conjunction with the exhibition.
The exhibition was organized in cooperation with The Artists'
Association of Finland and the British Council.
